We’ve been watching “What We Do In The Shadows’’ the TV series the past few days and it’s just as funny as the movie. The most recent episode we watched had the cast from the movie plus other famous tv & movie vampires.
We got up up early Friday morning for another sunrise hike. This time at Diamond Head State Monument on the southernmost coast of Oahu. Afterwards we spent the day driving around the island and stopping at different places to eat food.
I spent about 3 hours before bed trying to come up with something to draw related to this trip. I said fuck it and just drew O’ahu shaped like O’ahu.
A predawn hike at Makapu’u Lighthouse to catch the sunrise then a trip to Lanikai Beach for a little bit of swimming, snorkeling and laying out in the sun.
We went to Keaiwa Heiau State Park this morning and went on a gnarly 4.8 mile hike. It was muddy AF and I slipped and fell on my ass about a half-hour in. I had a few other close calls but still had a great time. Afterwards we got pancakes for breakfast and topped them with coconut syrup. My favorite pancake syrup. Tomorrow we’re going to a different part of the island for a predawn hike and watching the sunrise from the mountain top.
Another day hanging out at home. This time there was a documentary film crew at the house interviewing my cousin (actually my cousin’s wife but we consider her a cousin too.) It was fun talking to the them, watching them setup and asking them a bunch of questions about the process. They also bought us all a ton of Thai food that we ate for lunch & dinner. Tomorrow, my cousins and I are going hiking.
Another kick-back day with my cousin. Mostly just hanging around the house. Tomorrow, we got some plans to do some fun stuff outside. For the record, I have not gotten lei’d since I got here.
First day in Hawaii. I didn’t get any sleep last night or on the plane this morning. Pulled an all nighter. I’m gonna catch up on some zzz’s tonight tho.
That's right! From February 17 thru March 10th. I'll be staying with relatives while I'm there. I'm not planning on doing much there besides hiking and hanging out with my cousin. There's not much else to write about. I spent all day preparing for my 3 weeks away from home and now I got less than 4 hours before my flight leaves to shave shower and take a quick nap. Aloha & Mahalo!
After a minor update to my heart eyes logo, and uploading it to Instagram for Valentine’s Day, I got a few comments suggesting I put the design on a shirt. That was never the plan but I’m up for it. Unfortunately I’m going to be out of town for 3 weeks so it’ll be a month, maybe more, before I could really start production. I’ve started sketching ideas for the label inside the neck that tells you the size and, depending on cost, a small graphic for the back. There’s not much else I can do till I get back besides get pricing, lock down the artwork, keep the momentum going and take some pre orders. We’ll see if people are still interested a month after Valentine’s Day for this lovie-dovie design.
Today I got a covid test and it was much more pleasant than the last time I got in June. I made some minor tweaks to my heart-eyes logo and uploaded it to Instagram for Valentine’s Day. Several friends said I should make it into a shirt and I just might. I also finished the “Scents by Drea” label design for my friend. I’m still working on a logo design for another friend which I’m almost done with. I drew myself as the titular character from the original Donkey Kong video game just for funsies. Fun Fact: Mario made his first appearance as “jumpman” in the Donkey Kong arcade back in 1981.
Here are the three designs my friend liked from the 10 sketches I sent. They’re slightly cleaned up and with a bit of color. I’ve sent her these samples now I’m waiting on feedback before moving forward.
Here’s a couple snippets from a design I’m working on. Still in the early phases, and a bit rough, but slowly coming together.
The next time someone requests my design services and drops that line, I’m charging double! I’m currently working on two design projects for friends and both of them told me the same thing and gave me little to work with, expecting me to pull ideas from the ether. I came up with an idea for one of the projects, after asking my friend a bunch of questions regarding what they need from the design, and sent it it to her today. Sure enough it wasn’t what she was looking for. She then sent me a photograph as a reference to what she wants it to look like. If she had sent me the reference picture at the start it would have saved us both lots of time. So the next time a friend, or client, says to do “whatever I want” I’m gonna raise the price then offer to discount it if they come to me with a better understanding of what they’re looking for in a design.
I knocked out 10 miles of new trails Monday afternoon at Grant Park. That leaves me with approximately 5 miles of trails to hike before I can say I’ve hiked all of Joseph D. Grant County Park.
I did this just for fun. When I was a kid I loved Ninja Turtles so much I remember drawing them over & over till they looked sorta like they did in the 80s-90s cartoon.
I finally inked him. Black ink on white paper but I forgot to take a picture. It’s a Thank-You card going out with a t-shirt order and I already sealed the envelope. I digitally inked the one below and added a little color. I used the photo of the pencil sketch at the bottom.
I went and did a site visit Thursday evening where I, and other local artists, are going to paint on the asphalt. I’ll be doing my USA map below. I did a quick color fill in the bottom pic to get a better idea of what it’ll look like when it’s done. More details to follow.
I went on a 7.59 mile hike today and I’m closing in on my goal of hiking every trail at Joseph D. Grant County Park. I still have about 15.5 miles of trails to cover, not including the distance to reach those trails. I’m hoping I can finish in the next 2-3 visits.
